Obtaining a Copy Grant of Representation... What is a Grant of Representation?Most estates over £5,000 in England & Wales need a Grant of Representation from the Court. It is an official document with a Court Seal that allows the correct person by law (the Executor or Administrator) to deal with the assets of the deceased. A grant of representation is a document issued by the Court which enables the person(s) named in it to deal with the assets and belongings ('estate') of the deceased. It allows the money in banks, building societies etc. to be collected, property to be sold or transferred and debts to be paid. There are two basic types of grant of representation: 1. Probate: granted to the executors named in the Will 2. Letters of Administration: granted when the deceased did not leave a Will. Both these documents give the same authority to administer the estate. The word 'grant' is normally used describe both types. How do I find out whether a Grant has been issued? There is no time limit by which a grant must be obtained. A search of the Probate Calendar (National Index) will reveal whether a grant has issued. The amount of information given in the calendars has changed slightly over the years, but every entry will include the following details: - full name and last address - the date of death - the type of grant issued - the Registry at which the grant issued and the date of issue - the gross value of the estate How do I get a copy of a Grant? After a Grant has issued (Probate or Letters of Administration) from the Court we can obtain an official copy (with the Will attached if appropriate) for you. The cost depends on the date of death and how many copies you need but is normally £45 plus VAT. Simply CONTACT US to order a copy Grant. What if the person only died very recently? We can still search for the Grant. If the Grant has not yet issued it is called a 'standing search' and we will notify you if the Grant is issued within 6 months after the search has started.
